What you need to know about certified translations in Portugal
Portugal has no sworn translators. A certified translation is a translation the translator declares faithful to the original before a lawyer or notary, and both sign that declaration. The original, the translation and the declaration are bound into one set that cannot be taken apart.
For the certification we need the original, or an authenticated copy, two working days before the deadline. Leave the original with us; we make the authenticated copy and you get the original back when you collect the translation. Without an original, the certificate states that the translation was made from the copy you sent, and we cannot guarantee acceptance.
You receive a PDF by email as soon as it is ready, then the paper set: collect it at our office in central Lisbon by appointment, or we post it by registered mail anywhere in Portugal at no extra cost.
Before you order, ask the entity receiving your file exactly what it needs. One email, and it decides everything else.
Five things people ask us before ordering a certified translation
Most of the emails we get from expats ask the same five questions, usually in the same order. Here are the answers, so you can skip the back and forth.
Will AIMA accept it?
Yes, when it is done by the book. A certified translation under Portuguese law is a public act: the translator declares before a lawyer or notary that the translation is faithful to the original, and both sign that declaration. The original, the translation and the declaration are bound into one set that cannot be taken apart. What we cannot promise is the shortcuts: no original, no apostille when one is required, a photocopy nobody authenticated. So one email to the entity receiving your file, asking what it wants, saves you a second round.
Can you work from a scan, or do you need the original?
We start from a scan or a phone photo. For the certification, we need the original, two working days before the deadline. Leave it with us: we make an authenticated copy, the copy goes into the certified set, and you get the original back when you collect the translation. Without an original, the certificate states that the translation was made from the printed copy you sent, and we cannot guarantee it will be accepted.
What do I actually receive?
A PDF by email as soon as it is ready, so you can check it. Then the paper set, which is what offices in Portugal ask for: collect it at our office in central Lisbon, or we send it by registered post anywhere in Portugal at no extra cost.
How much, and how fast?
Upload your documents and you get the price in a few minutes, and it is final: the price you see is the price you pay for the files you uploaded. A project manager checks every automatic quote before the work starts; if the count is wrong through our fault, that is on us. If there is a serious problem with the files, we contact you before starting. Pay online, or ask us a question first. If your documents fall outside what we can price automatically, you get a quote within three business hours.
My appointment is next week.
Say so. Until 4 December, orders of up to three documents placed through this page get our reduced deadline at the price of the normal one.
