What is the BLEU score?

The BLEU score is the most widely used metric in the industry for evaluating machine translation quality. It measures the overlap between n-grams (word sequences) of the machine-translated text and a human-translated reference text.

The scale goes from 0 to 100. Perfect scores are virtually impossible, as there are multiple valid translations for any text. In practice, scores above 30 are considered reasonable and above 50 indicate good quality.
